It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our friend and Salento By Five co-author Luciana Cacciatore. Our friendship began in the Rome airport so many years ago. She introduced and welcomed us to her family, her friends, the food and culture of southern Italy. She was generous with her stories, her cooking and a hospitality that knew no limits. Luciana was a gifted writer, a prolific reader, a teacher and a traveler. She was so smart and knew so many languages. Most of all we will remember our visits to her garden where lemons, pears, tomatoes, squash, peppers and olives provide such bounty. We will remember the dishes she cooked, the savory and the sweet. We will remember the food because it came from the sacred soil of her garden, the soil that holds the blood, tears and stories of her ancestors. She left us so quietly. The stories are ours now to tell.
