In the Fall of 2006 (ten years ago), the fourth year in a row that we found ourselves back in Salento, we sat around the Sunday dinner table at Carlo and Lucia's summer home in Mancaversa.
Someone said, "We should write a book—a book together."
Maybe it was the wine, the afternoon sun, our satisfied bellies. Let's blame Lucia's homemade limoncello.
"Sure, let's write a book together," we answered in chorus.
October 15, 2006 Dear friends, It's exciting to begin this writing adventure together. Of course, we hope this will eventually become a wonderful book for anyone with an interest in Salento. We are slowly working our way through all the good media material you gave us. We watched the Sudeste video and loved the train and the interviews of those who work in the train stations or run the trains. The film took us back to the place and made us appreciate its beauty and history. Too bad that the train no longer runs to Otranto. We are back in our San Francisco Italian classes for a few more weeks. Everyone asked us about Salento. Who are our friends? How did we meet them? Their questions will be helpful in getting me to write and David to draw. I remembered that Lucia in describing our project to a colleague at her school, used the words, "writing a book a cinque mani" ....I like that phrase, "a cinque mani." Let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding your writing or anything else to do with our book project. Grazi'e buona fortuna, Audrey e Davide. |
